Tucked away along the Konkan coast, Velas is a village that comes alive once a year—not with music festivals or flashy tourism, but with the silent footsteps of tiny Olive Ridley turtles making their way to the Arabian Sea.

🐢 The Turtle Festival: A Natural Wonder

Every year from February to April, the peaceful beach of Velas transforms into a nursery for endangered Olive Ridley turtles. Organized by the local NGO Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra, this event celebrates conservation and allows visitors to witness one of nature’s most magical phenomena—baby turtles hatching and crawling toward the sea.

It’s not a show. It’s not a resort experience. It’s raw, emotional, and humbling.

🚗 Getting There

  • From Mumbai or Pune: 6–7 hours by road via NH66
  • Nearest Railway Station: Chiplun (75 km away)
  • Local Transport: Shared jeeps or private taxis to Velas

Expect narrow roads, sea winds, and a lot of coconut trees on the way.

What to Do (Besides Watching Turtles)

- Bankot Fort (8 Km) – A historic structure overlooking the sea, perfect for sunrise views.
- Harihareshwar Temple & Beach (36 Km) – A sacred detour, ancient Shiva temple and quiet beach cove.
- Anjarle Turtle Beach (25 km): Another hatching site, quieter than Velas.
- Explore Coconut Groves – Chat with farmers, and even try your hand at tree

- Homestay Meals –Most food is served by hosts—freshly cooked Konkani veg/non-veg thalis with fish curry, bhakri, sol kadhi, and rice.
- Kaka’s Kitchen (Velas Village) – Tiny eatery with poha, tea, and modaks.
- Snacks:Try freshly roasted peanuts and mangoes if visiting in summer.

  • Arrive before 6 AM for turtle hatching. The release is done just before sunrise.
  • No plastic or flash photography allowed on the beach.
  • Support the NGO through donations or volunteering during the event.
  • Best time to visit: March, for peak hatching days and pleasant weather.
